What’s your new year’s resolution for 2014? Like most people making resolutions this year, are you making the vow to lose weight? Many of the staff at Briarwood will be there right with you, if you do, exercising and watching food intake to shed the pounds. Losing weight is one of the hardest things to do, especially as we get older and experience a gradual slowing down of our metabolism. But with perseverance, we can do it!

A healthy diet and exercise regimen is important to keep our bodies in tip top shape and keep fat to a minimum. This type of lifestyle is the only way to get rid of intra-abdominal or visceral fat, which is the fat that builds up around the internal organs and gives you a bloated appearance.

Extra-abdominal fat refers to the fat that is located underneath the skin. We call it “pinchable” because you can, well, pinch it. This is the type of fat that you can both see and feel, and is often what contributes to “love handles”, a “muffin top” or “roll”. Pinchable fat can be eliminated with a healthy lifestyle but sometimes this is insufficient because it can be stubborn.
